14 “Israel is not a slave, is he? He was not born into slavery, was he?[a] If not, why then is he being carried off? 15 Like lions his enemies roar victoriously over him; they raise their voices in triumph.[b] They have laid his land waste; his cities have been burned down and deserted.[c]

2 The Lord’s message came to me, 2 “Go and declare in the hearing of the people of Jerusalem: ‘This is what the Lord says: “I have fond memories of you,[a] how devoted you were to me in your early years.[b] I remember how you loved me like a new bride; you followed me through the wilderness, through a land that had never been planted. 3 Israel was set apart to the Lord; they were like the firstfruits of a harvest to him.[c] All who tried to devour them were punished; disaster came upon them,” says the Lord.’”

1 The following is a record of what Jeremiah son of Hilkiah prophesied.[a] He was one of the priests who lived at Anathoth in the territory of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 The Lord’s[b] message came to him[c] in the thirteenth year that Josiah son of Amon ruled over Judah. 3 It also came in the days of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, and continued until the eleventh year of Zedekiah, son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the people of Jerusalem were taken into exile in the fifth month of that year.[d]

14 Shout for joy, Daughter Zion![a] Shout out, Israel! Be happy and boast with all your heart, Daughter Jerusalem! 15 The Lord has removed the judgment against you;[b] he has turned back your enemy. Israel’s king, the Lord, is in your midst! You no longer need to fear disaster. 16 On that day they will say[c] to Jerusalem, “Don’t be afraid, Zion!

9 Know for sure that I will then enable the nations to give me acceptable praise.[a] All of them will invoke the Lord’s name when they pray,[b] and will worship him in unison.[c] 10 From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia,[d] those who pray to me, my dispersed people,[e] will bring me tribute.

3 Beware to the filthy,[a] stained city; the city filled with oppressors![b] 2 She is disobedient;[c] she has refused correction.[d] She does not trust the Lord; she has not sought the advice of[e] her God.

8 “On the day of the Lord’s sacrificial meal, I will punish the princes[a] and the king’s sons, and all who wear foreign styles of clothing.[b] 9 On that day I will punish all who leap over the threshold,[c] who fill the house of their master[d] with wealth taken by violence and deceit.[e]

Bunch yourselves together like straw,[a] you undesirable[b] nation, 2 before God’s decree becomes reality[c] and the day of opportunity disappears like windblown chaff,[d] before the Lord’s raging anger[e] overtakes[f] you— before the day of the Lord’s angry judgment overtakes you!
