Today’s readings: Isaiah 59:1-21; 2 Timothy 1:15–2:13; Mark 10:1-16

My arm was too short a couple of days ago. My four-year-old son had kicked a DVD under the couch and, try as I might, I just couldn’t reach it — not with my hand, not with a ruler, not even with a hockey stick. I ended up taking the sectional couch apart just to reach the DVD. Then I had to put it all back together.

There are times when we kick things out of the way and under the couch. There are times we’d rather sweep things under the rug. But God won’t let them go. He keeps at it, keeps probing into the darkness, keeps convicting us with His Spirit until we finally relent and let Him take us apart. It’s not pleasant, and it is inconvenient, but it’s the only way that the lost can be found and what is gone can be restored.

What are you hiding from God? It’s that thing that came into your mind right now. You know it; God knows it; so why hide it anymore? Let God grab hold of it, take it away, and put you back together.

Prayer: Holy Father, I give that hidden thing to you and ask, for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, to take it away, and by the power of your Holy Spirit, to restore me. Amen.

Today’s devotion was written by the Rev. Dr. Eric Waters, Senior Pastor, St. John Lutheran Church, Boerne, TX.
