1 Chron. 17:16–27

17:16 King David went in, sat before the Lord, and said: “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my family, that you should have brought me to this point? 17And you did not stop there, O God! You have also spoken about the future of your servant’s family. You have revealed to me what men long to know, O Lord God. 18What more can David say to you? You have honored your servant; you have given your servant special recognition. 19O Lord, for the sake of your servant and according to your will, you have done this great thing in order to reveal your greatness. 20O Lord, there is none like you; there is no God besides you! What we heard is true! 21And who is like your people, Israel, a unique nation in the earth? Their God went to claim a nation for himself! You made a name for yourself by doing great and awesome deeds when you drove out nations before your people whom you had delivered from the Egyptian empire and its gods. 22You made Israel your very own nation for all time. You, O Lord, became their God. 23So now, O Lord, may the promise you made about your servant and his family become a permanent reality! Do as you promised, 24so it may become a reality and you may gain lasting fame, as people say, ‘The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is the God of Israel.’ The dynasty of your servant David will be established before you, 25for you, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a dynasty for him. That is why your servant has had the courage to pray to you. 26Now, O Lord, you are the true God; you have made this good promise to your servant. 27Now you are willing to bless your servant’s dynasty so that it may stand permanently before you, for you, O Lord, have blessed it and it will be blessed from now on into the future.”

Ps. 119:41–48

119:41 ו (Vav)

May I experience your loyal love, O Lord,

and your deliverance, as you promised.

42Then I will have a reply for the one who insults me,

for I trust in your word.

43Do not completely deprive me of a truthful testimony,

for I await your justice.

44Then I will keep your law continually

now and for all time.

45I will be secure,

for I seek your precepts.

46I will speak about your regulations before kings

and not be ashamed.

47I will find delight in your commands,

which I love.

48I will lift my hands to your commands,

which I love,

and I will meditate on your statutes.

1 Cor. 1:1–17

1:1 From Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Sosthenes, our brother, 2to the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, and called to be saints, with all those in every place who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours. 3Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

4I always thank my God for you because of the grace of God that was given to you in Christ Jesus. 5For you were made rich in every way in him, in all your speech and in every kind of knowledge— 6just as the testimony about Christ has been confirmed among you— 7so that you do not lack any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9God is faithful, by whom you were called into fellowship with his son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

10I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to agree together, to end your divisions, and to be united by the same mind and purpose. 11For members of Chloe’s household have made it clear to me, my brothers and sisters, that there are quarrels among you. 12Now I mean this, that each of you is saying, “I am with Paul,” or “I am with Apollos,” or “I am with Cephas,” or “I am with Christ.” 13Is Christ divided? Paul wasn’t crucified for you, was he? Or were you in fact baptized in the name of Paul? 14I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name! 16(I also baptized the household of Stephanus. Otherwise, I do not remember whether I baptized anyone else.) 17For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—and not with clever speech, so that the cross of Christ would not become useless.

It was self-evident to Luther that the evangelists gave consideration to the plan according to which they would relate the history of Jesus and, with that in mind, selected and arranged their materials accordingly, abbreviating here and expanding there. In the Church Postil Luther says in the Sermon for the Twenty- fifth Sunday after Trinity (St. Matt. 24:15-28): “In this chapter is described the conclu-sion and end of both kingdoms, that of Judah and that of the whole world. But the two evangelists, Matthew and Mark, mingle the two and do not keep the order that has been preserved in Luke, for they are concerned only about telling and repeating the words without troubling themselves as to the order in which the words were spoken.” “So understand that Matthew here weaves together and combines the end of the Jewish nation and of the world, mixes them into one dish. But if you wish to understand it you must separate it and apply the parts to their respective ends.” (60–61)
