NALC Disaster Response

February 29, 2024

NALC Disaster Response is responding to the 850,000 acre—or 1,300 square miles—of wildfires blanketing the panhandle of Texas and moving into Oklahoma.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration this week for 60 counties, as the Smokehouse Creek Fire has bome the second largest in Texas history.  Thousands of people were ordered to evacuate. At least one person is dead, in addition to thousands of heads of livestock.

The Smokehouse Creek fire broke out Monday Feb. 26 and NALC Disaster Response is delivering the first load of emergency relief supplies to the town of Borger and Fritch Thursday Feb. 29. The second load is scheduled for Saturday to the town of Canadian TX.  Future loads are in the process of being scheduled.

Monetary donations and gift cards are the priority needs and may be sent to NALC Disaster Response as soon as possible.  Mary Bates has been in touch with each community and has identified the emergency needs, which are quilts (no power to heat homes left standing), school supplies, health kits & baby care items such as diapers for those in shelters, flood buckets/cleaning supplies (to start washing down homes), kitchen kits for those sheltering in hotels, and Bibles.

Future needs will include water hoses, rakes, shovels and gift cards to purchase ranch supplies such as feed cubes, feed, and fencing supplies.  Please help if you possibly can – the high temperatures, the dead winter grass and the high winds combined to create this disaster of wildfires that are impacting so many people.

Please send gift cards to NALC Disaster Response, 16500 Noble Ave. Caldwell, Ohio 43724 and please send monetary donations to:

NALC Disaster Response, PO Box 130455, Saint Paul, MN  55113.

On Tuesday Aug. 8, a firestorm fueled in part by fierce winds from the Category 4 Hurricane Dora’s 140 mph winds that triggered raging fires on the island of Maui.  These fires hit the historic town of Lahaina, a popular tourist destination and economic hub. The wildfires also impacted the communities of Kihei and Kula.

As of Tuesday Aug. 22, the death toll form the Maui wildfires has surpassed 114, with over 850 people still unaccounted. Authorities are continuing to search the community by grids and the harbor waters for remains. This is the deadliest United States wildfire in more than 100 years.  3,000+ homes, businesses, schools, government and cultural centers are destroyed.

This wildfire caused more than a loss of homes and land, but a loss of identity, loss of heritage, and a loss of ohana as known there. Everyone on the island of Maui has been affected directly or indirectly by these fires, and all are suffering and mourning their losses.

An estimated 12,000 people are displaced, with people in shelters that will be closing soon, placed in hotels for the next 45 days, or living in their vehicles, tents in the park, on the street, or with family and friends.  With businesses destroyed, there is also a massive loss of jobs, income, and tourism.

NALC Disaster Response is providing support through local partners, shipping gift cards and other supplies for emergency relief.

To support these efforts, donate your gift cards to NALC Disaster Response, 16500 Noble Ave. Caldwell, Ohio  43724. If you’d like to give monetary support, send checks to the NALC Disaster Response, PO Box 860565, Minneapolis, MN  55486

On March 31, 2023, over 200 tornadoes impacted the central United States.  The storm system formed in the northern Texas area, proceeding to Little Rock Arkansas and on through Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and parts of Missouri and Kentucky.  Thankfully, NALC Disaster Response was prepared to help!

Each regional warehouse responded, delivering a total of 6 truckloads of health kits, cleaning supplies and many other items to the families who have lost everything to the tornadoes.

Terry Doyle of American Lutheran Church Rantoul IL shared the following God moments with us:

“Last week, the NALC’s Disaster Response Warehouse received a 26’ U-Haul Box Truck instead of the 20’ that was anticipated—but God knew that was exactly what they needed! With all the goods needed to send to 1st Baptist Church in Jacksonville Arkansas, including things like 323 flood buckets, 564 blankets, and 324 health kits, they were barely able to get the doors on the truck closed!

After a team of 14 loaded the truck, it made its way to Arkansas. Thank you Lord for helping provide for the needs of your people!”

There is so much need and so many families will need help rebuilding, so we encourage you to organize or sign up for a mission trip. Now that the Disaster Response Warehouses are depleted, we welcome any donations.  Also, a big thank you goes out to the many volunteers who made this response possible. Please keep the families and communities in your prayers – this devastation is so widespread.

For more information, contact Mary Bates at 740-509-1132 or to donate, please send your support to NALC Disaster Response, P.O. Box 860565, Minneapolis, MN 55486.

Disaster Response Warehouse Completed as Eagle Scout Project

Jordan Werner, a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and a member of Scout Crew 58, Elmer, NJ, completed work on transforming the church’s shed into a mini-storage facility for a Disaster Response Distribution site. Jordan, a junior at Schalick High School, led the job for his Eagle Scout project.

One of the things that led Jordan to work on this project was that he has seen the value of the church’s work in helping those impacted by disasters. Last year when an EF 3 tornado tore through Mullica Hill and nearby areas, the need to provide relief was immediate. However, the closest Disaster Response Warehouse was over 2 hours away in Middle River, Maryland. Jordan and his parents made the trip to bring back supplies that members of Emanuel, then helped distribute to families in need.

Now that the shed has been cleaned out and outfitted with shelves and organizational supplies, it will store school kits, health kits, blankets and quilts, flood buckets, and Bibles for Disaster Response. These kits come from member congregations of the North American Lutheran Church (NALC) that assemble and donate them throughout the year. At the annual meeting of the Atlantic Mission Region, those items are collected and then sent to areas throughout the continental United States where they are most needed.

“The one thing that sets us (the NALC) apart when it comes to disaster response is the spiritual care that pastors and lay people provide to individuals and families,” said The Reverend Mark Werner, Jordan’s father and Pastor of Emanuel Lutheran Church. “People need to talk when they experience a loss and it is important to have someone care by being not only a listening ear, but joining them in prayer,” he said.

The new disaster warehouse will be dedicated at the conclusion of the service on Sunday, October 23rd, 2022. Mrs. Mary Bates, the Director of the NALC Disaster Response will be present to join in the dedication. If anyone would like to make a donation toward the disaster response warehouse, gifts of blankets, Bibles, yard tools, and gift cards are always welcome.

This is not the first time Emanuel has been active in NALC Disaster Response. Two years ago, Sam and Anette Manno, members of Emanuel, outfitted a trailer with working stations and tools needed to aid in the rebuilding of homes by volunteers. Since its completion, the tool trailer has been utilized in parts of North Carolina and Florida.

Emanuel, a member congregation of the North American Lutheran Church (NALC). Emanuel joined the NALC in 2015.

Hurricane Ian Relief

NALC Disaster Response has now sent 6 box trucks of flood buckets, health kits, school kits, quilts, Bibles, shovels/rakes, and baby care items/diapers. That is over 3,000 flood buckets, 6000 quilts, and so much more.

Hurricane Ian left a wide path of destruction and pain and it is truly heartbreaking.  No matter how many times we see the aftermath of natural disasters, it is always gut-wrenching to witness family homes reduced to rubble, and to minister to the families of the people who died in the hurricane.

Thank you for your prayers and support – we have emptied the national warehouse and the regional warehouses and need your help to start re-stocking.

Please consider placing NALC Disaster Response on your calendar for 2023 and scheduling “Stuff the Trucks” — collecting flood buckets and other emergency relief supplies. You can also schedule a NALC Disaster Response Sunday and collect gift cards and monetary donations, schedule volunteer teams and mission trips to help in the regional warehouses and to start rebuilding in Florida.

To schedule any of the above, contact Mary Bates at 740-509-1132 or [email protected]

Hurricane Ian Slams Into Florida

More than 2.5 million people are without power this morning in Florida after Hurricane Ian made landfall as a powerful Category 4 storm along the state’s Gulf Coast yesterday afternoon. The system reached maximum sustained wind speeds of 155 mph—two miles per hour short of Category 5 status—before arriving just north of Fort Myers. No US deaths had been reported as of this morning, though search and rescue teams have been slowed by weather conditions.

The storm’s counterclockwise spin pulled water out of Tampa Bay while inundating areas along Florida’s southwestern coast, with between 12 and 16 feet of storm surge in some locations. The effect, generated by the force of the wind pushing excess water onto land, caused a number of buildings in the Fort Myers area. As of this morning the storm had been downgraded to a tropical storm.

Update, February 24, 2021:

5 Days with 44 Hours of Freezing Temperatures
69 Deaths – Hundreds Flee Homes
Burst Pipes, No Electricity, No Food or Clean Water,Widespread Devastation
Over $18 Billion in Damage So Far

“I will lift up my eyes to the hills from where my help comes, from the Lord Almighty”  Psalm 121

The Texas winter storm that had five days of snow, ice and freezing temperatures, has caused billions of dollars in damage to homes, businesses, churches, schools, and other structures throughout the entire state. The storm happened in an area of the country that is not prepared to handle such widespread winter storm devastation.

Dollar Per Dollar ALL donations go directly to helping individuals and families!

Mary Bates has been in touch with our Texas congregations and assessment is underway. Many of these families cannot or will not be able to live in their homes for some time. NALC Disaster Response is providing emergency relief and plumbing supplies and volunteers. The need is overwhelming, as the damage is statewide, but God is good and NALC congregations support their brothers and sisters in Christ!

Grocery Shelves are Empty – No Food or Water Available!

Julie Tucker of LCMS Texas states this storm has greatly affected the food chain supply as the several-day power outages have meant a loss of food for families, stores and food pantries. The State Department of Homeland Security estimates that it could take 2-3 months for food supplies to be restored throughout the state to return to normal. For vulnerable populations, this is devastating.

The water is not drinkable in most of the state without boiling it first due to the water plants also being affected by the freezing and burst pipe issues.

Damage Repairs in High Demand – Plumbers Needed – Supplies Limited!

The most significant need is for plumbers to make repairs and plumbing supplies, which are now almost impossible to acquire in the state. The state has estimated the average cost of repairs to burst pipes in a home is approximately $15,000 or more. Although some of this will be covered by insurance, FEMA, or state grants, the high deductibles will make it challenging to fund repairs.

If you are a licensed plumber, have critical plumbing supplies you can bring, and can volunteer to go to Texas to help with recovery efforts, please email Mary Bates at [email protected] or call 740-509-1132.

During assessment of needs, material needs are being compiled.  More will be coming on a detailed list of needed supplies.

  • Copper Pipe & Fittings
  • PVC Pipe & Fittings
  • PEX Tubing & Fittings
  • Iron Pipe Ball Valves

If you wish to donate any of these materials, contact Mary Bates to make arrangements for pick up or shipping.

To donate gift cards, please send to NALC Disaster Response, 16500 Noble Ave., Caldwell, Ohio  43724. Monetary donations go to NALC Disaster Response, P.O. Box 860565, Minneapolis, MN  55486-0565.

Thank you for your prayers and support!

Update, September 23, 2020:

NALC Disaster Response is responding to Hurricane Sally in Pensacola, Florida. Sally was a tropical storm which became a Category 2 hurricane when she made landfall September 16. Pensacola took a direct hit, causing power outages for over one million people. St. Paul Lutheran Church has recently joined the NALC — St. Paul’s roof was damaged, the pastor’s house was damaged, and over 30 congregational members’ homes were impacted by the winds and flooding. Two truckloads of emergency relief supplies have been delivered; flood buckets, Bibles and kits. It was a severe storm and your help is needed.

A derecho (hurricane strength winds) struck Cedar Rapids, Iowa in August. Our NALC congregation, Mission in Christ Lutheran Church, the Iowa Mission District and NALC Disaster Response are responding.

NALC Disaster Response and Pastor Ron Voss from Servants of Christ Lutheran Church, Robins, Iowa are reaching out to Cedar Rapids and the community in support after the derecho last week. Many communities in Iowa are devastated by hurricane strength winds — prayers and support are needed.

If your congregation, WNALC and Sunday Schools have emergency relief items to donate, please contact Mary Bates at 740-509-1132 to schedule a “Stuff the Truck”. See thenalc.org/nalc-disaster-response for the list of quilts, Bibles, flood buckets, and kits needed.

Update, August 11, 2020:

Pastor Jason Sigmon telephoned me today regarding an older gentleman on Oak Island whose home was destroyed by tidal surge and a car striking his home. This is a 1940’s home that is his permanent residence, he is divorced, had open heart surgery three weeks ago and has no homeowners insurance; for hurricane or flooding. He is trying to retrieve personal belongings at this time. Due to COVID-19, out of staters may not be allowed to volunteer in any areas of North Carolina at this time. I am hoping to schedule a “work day” this Saturday Aug. 15; to help this homeowner. If anyone in your congregation is available on Saturday, please contact me – I am trying to make overnight accommodations available also.

Update, May 6, 2020:

A message from Medicare.gov:

Unfortunately, scammers are using the COVID-19 pandemic to try to steal your Medicare Number, personal information, and money. And they’re using robocalls, social media posts, and emails to do it.

Remember, if anyone reaches out to get your Medicare Number or personal information in exchange for something, you can bet it’s a scam.

Be on the lookout, so you can stop scams before they happen. Here are recent Coronavirus scams to watch for:

  • Robocalls offering you respiratory masks they’ll never send
  • Social media posts fraudulently seeking donations for non-existent charities, or claiming to give you stimulus funds if you enter your bank account information
  • Fake testing kits, cures, “immunity” pills, and offers for protective equipment

Visit Medicare.gov/fraud for more information and tips on preventing Medicare scams and fraud.

Update, April 16, 2020:

From Mary Bates, NALC disaster response coordinator:

I received the below message from FEMA this morning. I have initiated a COVID-19 fund to respond in this time of a Disaster Declaration: send your monetary donations to NALC Disaster Response at 2299 Palmer Dr, Suite 220, New Brighton, MN 55112

Message from FEMA:

A month ago, President Trump declared a national emergency, which allowed federal government agencies to respond and help states, territories, and tribal entities conquer the COVID-19 pandemic.  In total, 56 states, territories and the District of Columbia, have received major disaster declarations, which is the first time in the history of our Nation. In addition, 26 tribes are working directly with FEMA under the emergency declaration.

Two months ago, many of us did not have or foresee the roles that we are now in – working remotely at home while the kids run around us, spending holidays away from family and friends, or being a frontline worker wearing a mask without the ability to show a smile of appreciation less than six feet away from colleagues or survivors. Our country and the world has, and continues, to change.

This disaster is different for us, as it probably is for you. But just as faith-based communities show us after a hurricane, tornado, or earthquake, you (the entire faith community) quickly filled the gaps and leaned into response mode before the federal government could step in. You ramped up donations, delivered food to your at-risk populations, and you educated the masses on how Houses of Worship can still practice their faith at a distance, but together at heart.

Last week, the DHS Center for Faith and Opportunity Initiatives team called many of our partners to not only check in, but to hear about the amazing initiatives they are running across the country. While FEMA is often in the headlines, many of you do not always receive the recognition you truly deserve during times of crisis. The stories we heard through the phones warmed our hearts and provided ground truth that we do not always have the privilege of seeing (or hearing). We want to give a shout out to some of those partners who are responding!

Update, April 14, 2020:

There have been over 30 fatalities in the southern states. We will be working with churches to organize and equip local volunteers to respond. Emergency relief donations are being collected now. Contact me for a pick up at 740-509-1132 or [email protected]

As many communities are asked to stay at home, my heart breaks for families that now have nowhere to go — losing loved ones and homes in a matter of minutes.

Our hearts are with those families who have lost loved ones and we are coming alongside them to help families physically start to recover from the tornadoes while reminding them that God loves them and they are not forgotten. Please join me in praying for God’s peace and comfort to cover them.

Update, March 26, 2020:

Word of Caution:

NALC Disaster Response cautions congregation about meeting in person. One of our NALC pastors, along with several of their executive committee members have most likely contracted the virus during a small executive committee meeting they held last week. NALC Disaster Response encourages congregations to strongly consider not holding in person meetings at this time. Consider using services such as Gotomeeting and Zoom to meet online.

Halfway through the Stay at Home Mandate in Ohio:

Four recommendations for our congregations: 1. Donate face masks in unopened packages to ambulance, clinics and local hospitals. If allowed, sew fabric face masks. 2. Communicate with other members of your congregations by phone and social media in fellowship and love. Get to know people who you do not routinely talk to at church. 3. Provide an outdoor “free library” of non-perishable food and paper products such as toilet paper in single packs — restock as necessary. 4. Follow Joshua 1:8, “Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night…be sure to obey everything written in it” (ESV). Try the “three by five technique.” Each week identify a Scripture that relates to an area in which you want to grow, write it down on a 3×5 index card and memorize it. In one year you’ll have 52 Scriptures you can recall and stand on. Think how that will impact your life!

Update, March 25, 2020:

NALC Disaster Response, at the national disaster warehouse, just finished delivering several thousand N-95 face masks and gloves to Southeast Ohio area ambulance services, health clinics, and local hospitals — we cleaned out the Warehouse, folks! Are you checking your garages and tools kits? Do you have any unopened packages of N-95 face mask that you were going to use to paint or otherwise — donate them now! Our medical professionals desperately need them. When Mary Bates called Marietta Memorial and was mistakenly transferred to a doctor, she went ahead and explained our mission and he said extremely emphatically, “Hell YES, we need all the face masks you can donate” and NALC Disaster Response has now delivered cases to him! Thank you, Jesus for Your love in this time of need.

Update, March 24, 2020:

Story from Ohio

Jack and Diane Walker from Salem Lutheran Church in West Alexandria, OH, and Tim Schubach and his wife Rita, went through all of the flood buckets stored at Salem, and picked out all of the masks and gloves. Jack and Diane took 10 sets of about 10 masks and 5 pairs of gloves to a medical facility somewhere close to West Alexandria. Tim and Rita took the rest, two garbage bags full of masks and one full of gloves, to Kettering Hospital in Kettering near Dayton. Kettering Health Network is one of the two big hospital networks in the Dayton area.

Kettering said they’d accept any masks they had, N95 or not.

Your Help Is Needed!

If you have flood buckets in storage, please contact your local ambulance services and hospitals to determine if they are allowed to receive your N-95 masks, gloves and disinfectants! Please share them if allowed! Some hospitals are requesting fabric face masks — ask that question also and then contact local quilters. Here are instructions: https://buttoncounter.com/2018/01/14/facemask-a-picture-tutorial/?fbclid=IwAR0wHYbXsfKPCZhwUvVQiOazkbxchgZf0uOw2K3acX3flSBNq6K9b1U9t2c

Update, March 13, 2020:

recipe with 99% alcohol could be three parts alcohol to two parts aloe vera. OregonLive recommends a two-to-one ratio of 91% isopropyl alcohol to aloe vera. You can also add eight to 10 drops of scented oil if you want to smell nice. There are many recipes on the internet.

What can we do, as members of a Church Safety team, to help our members and staff mitigate the impact ofCOVID-19? I sent out the picture of a greeter, dressed in a hazmat suit, as a joke, but is it in our future to greet people, wearing a mask and carrying a handheld thermometer? By the way, I just priced handheld thermometers, on Amazon, and a decent one is around $80. HIPPA is, I feel, preventing us from getting a lot of pertinent information about this coronavirus variant. Like, how old are the victims and what were their underlying health conditions? It seems that risk goes up considerably past age 70 and young children are not impacted at all. Look at your congregations! How many are over 70 and have health concerns?
Then the pastors. How many visit the shut-ins? One thing the MSM does not emphasize, enough, is that half the deaths, from COVID-19, happened in ONE nursing home (Life Care Center, King County, Washington). Last I checked, that was 14 deaths, out of 24. It is hard to keep up with the statistics as they change by the hour. Anyway, King County is Seattle. My prayers go out to my friends on Bainbridge Island, WA. Anyway, my point is, our pastors visit many of the shut-ins, in nursing homes. They could, inadvertently, carry it in or carry it out. I read that Life Care Center had previously been cited for problems with it’s infectious disease control. Many of us have friends or family in nursing homes. I always see signs telling visitors to stay away if they have symptoms of a cold or the flu.
Churches are already changing some of their practices in response to COVID-19. Eliminating the Common Cup, during communion, for one. Limiting hand shakes, during “share the Peace”. For years, I have seen people doing fist bumps, instead of handshakes, during cold and flu season. Hand sanitizer is increasingly available, around the sanctuary. Social Distancing, which I mentioned yesterday, may encourage people to spread out and even occupy the front pews! Hopefully, it won’t prevent them from coming to church at all.
There are some recommendations to use elbow bumps, or a smile and a nod, instead of a hand shake. One reason face masks aren’t effective in limiting spread of the disease is because people tend to touch their faces, with their hands, many times an HOUR. A doctor once told me, several years ago, that the main entry point, for a virus, was around the eyes. You can sanitize your hands, one minute, and touch an infected surface, soon after, and you are infectious again. Even if you happen to be wearing plastic gloves and you touch a contaminated surface and then touch your face…..
In God’s Service.

Update, March 11, 2020:

Coronavirus Precautions from Mary Bates, NALC Disaster Response Coordinator:

I have been listening and tracking carefully for what Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and a multitude of other professionals are reporting on coronavirus and what it may mean for us in the Church.

Based on the advice of medical professionals and the CDC, we at the NALC Disaster Response are urging that if there’s even the smallest chance that we can be carriers of the virus, we should not visit nursing homes, go to work, or be in crowds. Self-quarantining for travelers is recommended, for up to 14 days.

It is recommended that persons considered “high risk” NOT ATTEND WORSHIP. High risk people include those over seventy and those with cardiovascular disease, respiratory conditions, or diabetes. If you choose to attend worship, you should NOT shake hands, instead, wave or do the sign language hello.

It has also been noted that it is twice as easy to contract the coronavirus than it is ordinary flu viruses. Proper hand washing is recommended. Hand washing is the #1 way to prevent the spread of the virus. Pastor Matthew Magera suggests that we say the Lord’s Prayer while hand washing to insure the full measure of cleanliness.

A portion of these recommendations are taken from Pastor Mark Daniels. Other policies and procedures that our churches are employing need to be shared.  Thank you pastors and staff for your support!

Due to the very mobile society that we live in today, it is anticipated that the virus will spread before being contained.

Please look at this website to see preventive measures recommended by the US Centers for Disease Control: cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html.

Update, September 3, 2019:

Hurricane Dorian, the first major hurricane of the 2019 storm season, slammed into the Bahamas as a powerful Category 4 storm. The storm’s powerful winds and heavy downpours have caused unprecedented flooding and damaged countless homes and businesses. Rescue workers are working quickly to assist individuals and families trapped in their houses, while organizations are organizing aid and relief efforts to help all those affected by record-setting Dorian.

As Dorian moves over the Bahamas, it has its sights set on much of the southeastern coast. Meteorologists predict communities from Florida through North Carolina may be affected by the storm as it moves north over the coming days.

You can help families and communities affected by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas and the United States today. NALC Disaster Response is taking donations of material emergency relief supplies at the disaster warehouses in Caldwell, Ohio and the Carolinas; and please send monetary donations to NALC Disaster Response, 2299 Palmer Dr. Suite 220, New Brighton, MN   55112.

Interested in funding long-term support for the communities affected by Hurricane Dorian? Volunteers and donations of building supplies, gift cards and monetary donations are needed for long-term recovery rebuilding. The NALC Disaster Response Fund allows donors to give now to support recovery needs that will continue to surface long after our attention and the media attention has turned away. Recovery after a major storm like Hurricane Dorian can take many months, if not years.

Update, September 2, 2019:

NALC Disaster Response is tracking Hurricane Dorian, a Category 4 hurricane, as it moves toward the United States. We stand ready to deploy emergency relief supplies, volunteers, and assistance in support of our congregations. Your prayers and support are needed. Please pray for the thousands of families in harm’s way. Mary Bates, NALC Disaster Response coordinator, will post daily updates as the storm progresses. For more information, contact Mary at 740-509-1132 or [email protected]. To donate, please send your donations to NALC Disaster Response, 2299 Palmer Dr., Suite 220, New Brighton, MN  55112.

Update, August 22, 2019:

From Mary Bates, NALC disaster response coordinator: I am looking forward to meeting everyone at the Sept. 14 Iowa Mission District Convocation. I will have a display there and information on long-term recovery for rebuilding of homes in Nebraska and vicinity. The WNALC and NALC Disaster Response are also doing a “Stuff the Truck” instead of the semi like we did last year.

Please let me know how many items you will be bringing to the convocation, so I can bring the proper size of truck—I really hope to fill a 26′ box truck!

Print and share the following flyers (Stuff the Truck & WNALC Donation Requests). Contact me if you have any questions ([email protected]). See you Sept. 14!

Update, August 21, 2019:

From Tim Schubach (Miamisburg, OH) – I went out again this morning with Kim Moore to deliver furniture to tornado victims. We were a team of three with only two stops, but a pretty full load. We had a couple of beds, two ultra-heavy portable wardrobes, kitchen table with extension and chairs, two more sofa sleepers, a six piece sectional sofa, two TV’s, and several boxes of miscellaneous household items.

One thing I’d never thought about before … I asked one man if he was in the house when the tornado hit. He said no, he was in the county lockup. But when they all realized tornadoes had touched down, many of them started to cry knowing that they were safe in jail but not knowing anything about their families. And this man has six kids.

Even tho the Oregon District shooting pushed the tornado out of the spotlight a little, please don’t be fooled into thinking the needs have been met. Some of these pictures are from near Ground Zero in Trotwood.

Update, July 10, 2019:

Our Savior Lutheran Church, Auburn, CA is reaching out to Grace Lutheran Church, Ridgecrest, CA after the 5.4 and the 7.1 earthquakes and the multiple aftershocks that have devastated Ridgecrest and the surrounding communities. Through our partnership with Grace Lutheran, a LCMC congregation whose pastor, Kris Madsen, is dual rostered, hundreds of families will be served. Since the store shelves are completely empty, Our Savior volunteers are delivering the first truck load of emergency relief supplies the week of July 8. Baby and adult diapers, non-perishable food items, Bibles, first aid kits, and personal care items are needed. Your support and prayers are needed. To support delivery of emergency supplies, send donations to NALC Disaster Response, 2299 Palmer Dr. Suite 220, New Brighton, MN  55112.

Update, June 21, 2019:

Diane Walker, president of the Salem, West Alexandria, Ohio, Women of the North American Lutheran Church (SWNALC) reports, “Our group has collected donations to create health/hygiene and cleaning kits to provide disaster relief for the Dayton, Ohio area following the devastating tornados and for the flood victims in the Midwest area. As of date we have assembled over 500 health kits alone and approximately 300 or more cleaning kits for cleanup. We receive some donations from area residents and parishioners but the needs far surpass the donations … We have delivered and distributed many kits to Brookville, Trotwood, Northridge, and teamed up with the NALC Disaster Relief for distribution in downtown Dayton and for flood victims in the Midwest. What kits that will not be used locally will go to a warehouse in Caldwell, Ohio to be trucked to areas affected by natural disaster, but so far our local neighbors are still in need. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.”

Volunteer teams for rebuilding are needed now! Gift cards/donations of flooring, drywall and building supplies are also needed. Please send donations to: NALC Disaster Response — NALC Warehouse, 810 Main St., Caldwell, Ohio, 43724.

For more information, please contact Mary Bates, NALC Disaster Response, at [email protected] or 740-509-1132.

Update, June 1, 2019:

There is currently a need for health kits. Send donations of health care kits to: NALC Disaster Response — NALC Warehouse, 810 Main St., Caldwell, Ohio, 43724.

Today, over 30 NALC volunteers are serving!

Update, May 31, 2019:

All Ohio NALC congregations near the path of the recent tornado are undamaged and are responding. Local congregations include: Salem – West Alexandria, Living Water – Centerville, Grace – West Carrollton, St John – Greenville, St John – Celina and Zion – St. Mary. Salem Lutheran Church in West Alexandria shared a recent update that they are still collecting, assembling and delivering food for the rescue workers. They have distributed prepared and dry food for victims, lots of water (a state of emergency was declared in Brookville due to water; tornado upgraded to EF4) 84 health kits and 17 large tubs of miscellaneous items. They have delivered about four truckloads of food, water and supplies since Tuesday. A local volunteer shared that she is “so amazed at God’s providence and the generosity of others.” Service groups in the community are using Salem Lutheran Church to brew large quantities of coffee and a local restaurant is loaning insulated carafes (Salem’s women’s group donated the coffee and cookies) to take to Brookville Fire Department for the rescue crews. The Salem Lutheran Church Facebook page had over 2,600 views so they are expecting more of specific donation requests made, such as respiratory masks, gloves, sunscreen, batteries, flashlights, chains for chainsaws, trash bags, baby wipes and more water. If the needs are met in the Brookville area, additional donations will be sent to Celina and the Midwest flood victims. Salem Lutheran Church’s response effort will be ongoing through NALC Disaster Response — send your donations to the NALC Warehouse, 810 Main St., Caldwell, Ohio, 43724

Celina, Ohio was in the path of the tornado. Celina First Church of God has already established a response team. The congregation has been feeding people and giving out bottles of water since the tornado hit. They also have a large supply of boxes for people to pack up what they can salvage from their homes. Local businesses made donations of food and personal hygiene items, most of which are being distributed by First Church of God. In the aftermath, there are people driving golf carts through the areas of Celina that have been hit, handing out water and snacks to people as they work to clean up debris. Several streets are closed to all traffic except cleanup crews and golf carts.  St. John members and Pastor Karen are assisting as needed.

While not very wide, the tornado’s path was almost two miles long, and the damage to homes ranged from slight to total loss. People in the community are saying they have no choice but to tear down what is left and rebuild. Fortunately, only eight people were displaced by the storm. The remaining people whose homes are inhabitable have been able to stay with family and friends. Unfortunately, there was one fatality from the storm when an SUV was picked up by the tornado and hit the home of an elderly gentleman. The tornado’s path went through a fairly affluent neighborhood where homes were well built, well insured, and insurance agents were very quick to respond to the disaster. Had the tornado veered less than half a mile in another direction, the area hit could have included mobile homes, and older homes that could not have withstood the storm. The damage would have been much more severe, and the number of people affected would have been much higher.

None of the homes in the area have power. Electric tools and household appliances are being run with generators which, unfortunately, is not something to which everyone has access. However, neighbors are sharing what they have, and people whose homes were not damaged are pitching in and helping out where needed. Power is expected to be returned within the next day or two. Additionally, response has been so great that First Church of God is expected to close down its food service due to the dwindling need.

If you would like to make a donation to the Disaster Response Team’s work in Ohio, please consider donating gift cards and Bibles. Donations can be sent to: NALC Disaster Warehouse, 810 Main St., Caldwell, Ohio 43724. At the NALC Convocation, Mary Bates will have a small trailer for donated material goods while the WNALC will be hosting a “Stuff the Tonka” truck for gift cards.

In addition to the work being done in Ohio, NALC Disaster Response is continuing to identify and assess needs in the Great Plains Mission Region due to recent flooding.  Thank you to the congregations for sharing the love of Jesus on the Mississippi and Arkansas rivers.

Update, May 29, 2019:

Our thoughts and prayers are with thousands of families impacted by this severe weather: over 500 reported tornadoes for 12 straight days, spread from Colorado to New Jersey, 8 fatalities; flooding from South Dakota to Louisiana, setting historic records, and severe thunderstorms later this week as the jetstream causes conflicting storm systems across the US.

In the uncertainty of the days and weeks ahead, may the families who have lost everything find comfort and solace in the love of God, who holds each of us close in times of sorrow and despair. I have been in contact with most of our pastors and congregations. While none of our churches have been damaged, preliminary reports are that some members of our congregations have suffered damage to their homes. Due to the widespread destruction, I am asking our pastors and congregational members to help with assessment and identification of needs. Updates will be forthcoming.

Your help is needed: prayer, monetary donations, volunteer, your material goods! Send your donations to NALC Disaster Response, 2299 Palmer Dr., Suite 220, New Brighton, MN 55112

May we lift up in prayer the families, the first responders, our congregations and those who share the love of Jesus as thousands begin to rebuild their loves and their homes.

For more information, please contact Mary Bates, NALC Disaster Response, at [email protected] or 740-509-1132.

Update, May 28, 2019:

NALC Disaster Response is responding to the recent onset of storms from Texas to Ohio.  Memorial Day, three tornadoes touched down in Ohio, causing significant damage throughout western Ohio. Flooding is occurring on the Mississippi River, due to the March Nebraska storms and current rainfall, impacting Fayetteville and surrounding areas. Oklahoma and adjacent areas have been flooded and impacted by tornadoes, causing damages to thousands of homes.

Thankfully, NALC congregations have minimal impact so they and NALC Disaster Response are reaching out to the larger community and serving; sharing the love of Jesus. NALC Disaster Response is providing emergency relief supplies due to “Stuff the Truck” events at the Ohio Mission Region Convocation, the Carolinas Convocation, and the Great Rivers Leader Retreat.  There is a need for additional Stuff the Truck events, so prepare for the national NALC Convocation by collecting gift cards to “Stuff the Tonka” toy truck or contact Mary Bates to schedule a Stuff the Truck.

To volunteer for clean up efforts in your local community, contact your county emergency management agency or Mary Bates, [email protected].

Volunteers are being scheduled for long term recovery in North Carolina for Hurricane Florence at this time. Donation management needs are: Bibles (St. Elias Lutheran Church in Chicago needs Bibles written in Arabic), health kits and layettes are needed, and by late July/August school kits and quilts are needed. Thank you for your prayers and support!

Update, April 15, 2019:

On Sunday April 14, tornadoes struck the southern United States, killing eight including two children in a car destroyed by a tree. Pastor Mark Braaten and a volunteer team from his church have deployed to help with clean up in Texas. Families in Vicksburg, MS, and also Louisiana, have damages. The Midwest had a tornado in north central Ohio, Mansfield area. Damages are being assessed at this time. As storms continue across the United States, I am thankful for our NALC congregations and their hard work, reaching out to families in need. Your help is needed: prayers, donations of emergency response supplies, volunteer teams and monetary support. Keep your prayers and donations coming!

For more information, contact Mary Bates, NALC Disaster Response coordinator, 810 Main St., Caldwell, Ohio  43724 or 740-509-1132 or [email protected].

We are restocking the warehouse, however, I just learned that the Rosebud and Pine Ridge Indian Reservations on the border of Nebraska and South Dakota are completely flooded by the Platte River and no one has been helping. Pastor Jeff Cottingham of Trinity, Gothenburg, NE asked if there was any help available — if you would like to help send emergency relief supplies, gift cards and monetary donations are welcome. Send your donations to NALC Disaster Warehouse, 810 Main St., Caldwell, Ohio 43724 or call Mary Bates, NALC Disaster Response coordinator at 740-509-1132!

Schedule to Volunteer Today!

Your help is needed in Texas for Hurricane Harvey long-term recovery and also in North Carolina for Hurricane Florence long-term recovery. Together we can make a difference in a family’s life. Please don’t hesitate to share the love of Jesus and your time, talents and treasures.

There is a massive amount of home rebuilding that needs done in the Houston area of Texas  — volunteers are housed at Peace Lutheran Church and St. Paul Lutheran Church, Rosenberg, TX!

For Hurricane Florence in North Carolina, NALC Disaster Response has established volunteer housing at Reformation Lutheran Church, New Bern, NC and also St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Wilmington, NC.

Volunteers bring new hope to the many families who still don’t have homes. We rebuild lives after disasters one home at a time. For more information, contact Mary Bates, NALC Disaster Response coordinator at 740-509-1132 or [email protected].

Update, December 26, 2018:

Hurricane Florence made landfall on September 16, devastating thousands in North Carolina.

Mary Bates, NALC Disaster Coordinator, assessed the need for donation centers and volunteer team housing, supporting local congregations in the impacted area to serve the larger community.

Truckloads of water, flood buckets with cleaning supplies, rakes, shovels, garden hoses, more than 1,000 hygiene kits, 500 layettes/baby items, 2,000 quilts and Bibles, school supplies and pet food have been delivered to families in need from New Bern, NC to Wilmington, NC and sites in between by NALC Disaster Response.

NALC Congregations are being asked to respond to the following needs:

  1. Volunteer teams for rebuilding homes are needed in New Bern, NC, Wilmington, NC and Rosenberg, TX (Hurricane Harvey long-term recovery), where on-going recovery is in process. Spiritual Christian care teams are needed with each team completing rebuilds, including clergy and laity, to minister to families as they return to their damaged homes; to pray with them and remind them that the Body of Christ is there for and with them in this difficult time. Volunteer teams will be needed throughout the next year and devastated families will need help for a number of years. Mary Bates is addressing the needs for the California wildfires and will post volunteer team needs on the NALC website as it develops.
  2. Donations of gift cards for building supplies for the volunteer teams to utilize on-site. Flooring is a significant need. Monetary donations may be sent to NALC Disaster Response.
  3. Flood Bucket & Kit Challenge: Thank you to each mission district now hosting a disaster warehouse. The warehouses in Caldwell, OH, Statesville, NC, Kings Mountain, NC and Rosenberg, TX need filled—they are empty going into 2019.  Will your youth or women’s groups host a collection of flood buckets, health kits, school kits, quilts or layettes? Most importantly Bibles? Items needed in each kit are posted on the NALC website under “Disaster Response.”

Update, November 27, 2018:

Mary Bates, NALC disaster response coordinator, has established donation centers and volunteer housing through our congregations in each of the disaster impacted areas. To donate or volunteer in 2019 for any of these disasters, please contact Mary at 740-509-1132 or [email protected]

California Wildfires (2018):

Through Our Savior Lutheran Church – Auburn CA, NALC Disaster Response is supporting response to the “Camp Fire.”  California has had over 70 wildfires in 2018 and our congregations have been there to respond and provide support during the rebuilding process for families without homeowners insurance.

Hurricanes Florence and Michael (2018):

Reformation Lutheran Church – New Bern NC and St. Matthew Lutheran Church – Wilmington NC are hosting volunteers for long-term recovery rebuilding. Adult and youth teams are needed. Donations of building supplies and furniture is needed.

Hurricane Harvey (2017):

Long-term recovery rebuilding is on-going for the thousands of families who were impacted by Harvey in September 2017. Volunteers are really needed.  Families are living in flood damaged homes as there are no other options for them.

Local responses are taking place in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania.

Thank you for your prayers and support.

Update, November 16, 2018:

NALC congregations in North Carolina have moved into long term recovery for Hurricane Florence families. Volunteers are needed to deliver furniture, to provide rebuilding of homes, and to minister spiritual Christian care. We are also collecting new toys for Christmas for the children who have lost everything.

Through an LCMC congregation, NALC Disaster Response has delivered a truck load of emergency supplies to the Panama City area.

Long term recovery rebuild teams are needed in Texas for Hurricane Harvey recovery — Peace Lutheran Church in Rosenberg, Texas will host volunteers throughout the winter months.

California congregations have not been impacted by the wildfires, however, Our Savior – Auburn CA is reaching out to some of the families at Paradise.

Please pray for the families who have lost loved ones.

Mary Bates is scheduling volunteer teams, collecting donations of furniture and toys and gift cards — to donate, contact Mary at 740-509-1132 or [email protected]. The need will be on-going as we think about 2019!

Update, Oct 15, 2018:

Flood Bucket Challenge Update:  Thanks to your efforts, there is a box truck filled with flood buckets and relief supplies ready to go at Mary Bates’ direction. This means, however, that the warehouses are once again empty. With Hurricane Michael’s destruction now added to the mix, the need remains greater than ever and we will need to stock the warehouses again as quickly as possible. Our goal will be to continue to keep the supplies coming throughout the fall until there is no further need and the warehouses are full for next year’s hurricane season.

There remains an immediate need for industrial-size trash bags and N95 disposable respirator masks for the clean-up efforts, so please include them in your collections:

Flood Bucket Challenge
25 Flood Buckets or more*
Bibles (include one Bible for every bucket)
Trash bags (black, industrial size)
N95 Disposal respirator masks (standard size, generic or 3M brand)
25 Health Kits
Diapers (any and all sizes)
School Kits

*Caldwell Ohio has a large number of empty buckets at the warehouse, so contact Mary before you buy new ones.

Please limit your material donations to the items listed above. No bottled water is necessary at this time.

A description of the kits is available at:

https://www.thenalc.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/NALCDisasterResponseKits2018.pdf.

Have your congregations collect these items as soon as possible and deliver them to the National Disaster Warehouse in Caldwell, Ohio—contact Mary Bates for pick up options.

Gift Cards (Lowes or Home Depot, only) are also welcome. They should be designated “NALC Disaster Response” and mailed directly to Mary Bates, NALC Disaster Response Coordinator, at:

Mary Bates: NALC Disaster Response
810 Main St.
Caldwell, OH 43724

Monetary donations may be made directly online at:

https://www.thenalc.org/nalc-disaster-response/

Checks may also be made payable to “North American Lutheran Church” for “Disaster Response Fund,” and mailed to:

North American Lutheran Church
2299 Palmer Drive, Suite 220
New Brighton, MN 55112-2202

Need for Drivers: NALC Disaster Response is compiling two lists of those who are willing and able to drive trucks for current and future disaster response efforts in the Carolinas, Virginia, Florida and Georgia:

  • Drivers for 26-foot box trucks
  • Owners of trucks that can pull gooseneck trailers loaded to a capacity of 10,000-12,000 lbs

Two-person driving teams are preferred. If you or your parishioners are interested, please contact Mary.

Volunteer Work Crews and Spiritual Care Teams

Mary Bates continues to coordinate Volunteer Work Crews to our sites in the Carolinas, and she will be doing the same for areas affected by Hurricane Michael. Once again, especially now with respect to Michael’s aftermath, we need to be mindful that we do not send too many people too soon, so as to create a burden for local personnel. There is much work to be done over a long period of time: cleaning now, rebuilding later. With all this in mind, Mary will gladly work with you to schedule crews from your congregations.

We will also need Spiritual Care Teams, including both clergy and laity, to minister to families as they return to their damaged homes: to pray with them and remind them that the Body of Christ is there for and with them in this difficult time.

Please prayerfully consider how your congregations might help with this overall effort, and coordinate with Mary Bates at (740) 509-1132 or [email protected].

Please continue to pray for all those who have suffered the loss of loved ones, homes and property in the wake of these storms, and for those who continue to come to their aid.

Update, Oct 13, 2018:

As search and rescue teams continue, help is needed with debris removal, especially chainsaw teams. NALC Disaster Response is resilient and we are reaching out with the love of Jesus to the thousands of families impacted by Hurricane Michael. Until volunteers are allowed to be on-site to help, send your monetary donations to NALC Disaster Response, 2299 Palmer Dr, Suite 220, New Brighton, MN 55112.

Update, Oct 12, 2018:

NALC Disaster Response is assessing the damages caused by Hurricane Michael and stands ready to assist and support any of our congregations who have been impacted.

If your congregation or any of your members have damages, please contact Mary Bates as soon as possible and we will provide assistance.

If you have resources or can help in any way, also please let Mary know.

Monetary donations should be sent to NALC Disaster Response, 2299 Palmer Dr., Suite 220, New Brighton, MN 55112.

Continue to watch for updates. An update on our Hurricane Florence transition into long-term recovery will follow; volunteer teams are needed as we start the rebuilding process.

Please pray for the families and their recovery from this devastating storm.

Mary Bates, Director NALC Disaster Response, 740-509-1132, [email protected]

Update, Oct 9, 2018:

Thanks be to God — He is good!  Reformation Lutheran Church – New Bern NC is housing volunteers and has the donations center running smoothly.  Thank you Pastor Alan Daughtery.

St. Matthew – Wilmington NC is also housing volunteers and has the donations center up and running.  Thank you Pastor Sam Zumwalt and Nancy Magruder.

Over 70,000 people have registered for FEMA assistance, over 40 people have lost their lives due to Hurricane Florence, and now Conway, SC is flooding — evacuations initiated yesterday.  Please continue your efforts to collect emergency relief supplies such as flood buckets and Bibles. Volunteers may contact me to schedule time at either location to assist people like Heidi: She is an elderly widow with two trees in her house. She has insurance and is very anxious, even fearful, that she will not understand her insurance agent when the company sends someone. She needs help and is afraid of strangers just showing up. NALC Disaster Response is providing spiritual care and helping her every day by checking on her and scheduling a volunteer to be present when the insurance company arrives. Thank you for your prayers for our families like Heidi.

Update, Sept 21, 2018:

Dear NALC congregations,

Your help is needed! It is BAD — I am in New Bern, NC at Reformation Lutheran Church and it’s been seven days since Hurricane Florence made landfall. Homes are flooded, water is standing every where; in homes, on the streets, in churches. Rivers are rising (not receding), causing so much more flooding.

I have never seen this much water SEVEN DAYS after…

The Carolinas Mission District needs you!

1.  Send monetary donations to NALC Disaster Response, 2299 Palmer Dr., Suite 220, New Brighton, MN 55112

2.  “Stuff the Semi” in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Iowa or deliver flood buckets, health kits, school kits, layettes, Bibles, gift cards and other emergency relief supplies

3.  Volunteers are needed: debris removal teams, flood bucket/spiritual care distribution teams in New Bern, Wilmington and possibly Conway, SC

4.  Schedule your youth and adult groups for long-term recovery rebuilding now — our congregational members need help repairing their homes.

I ministered to a young mother last evening, as I was pumping gas in my NALC Disaster Volunteer t-shirt. She came to me crying and asked for $5 to buy milk for her baby. The volunteer with me, Ken Watson, gave her $20 and she profusely thanked him, only to find that the store did not have any milk on the shelves and she started crying again. I started praying with her and Ken started asking for milk: a few minutes later we found that Walmart just received a truckload — thanks be to God!

Every road is closed due to water, every family needs prayer and the love of Jesus — will you help?

Update, Sept 13, 2018:
NALC Disaster Response has been helping in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico for over a year now, and hundreds of our volunteers have restored homes and hope.  There continues to be many homes that need rebuilt, especially in Houston/Rosenberg area.  Situations like this are expected to be common throughout the Carolinas in the wake of Hurricane Florence.

Florence is being called a record-breaker, with widespread destruction anticipated.  Please join us in praying for the safety of the hundreds of thousands in the path of this impending disaster.

Much like Hurricane Harvey that struck the Houston area last year, Florence is expected to linger in the area for days, bringing record rainfall totals and producing historic floods that are likely to destroy and damage homes for hundreds of square miles.

We are preparing for the worst:  volunteers are needed for emergency response and then long term recovery rebuilding.  If you can volunteer, contact Mary Bates at [email protected] or 740-509-1132.

To donate flood buckets, health kits, school kits, Bibles and other supplies, please check the NALC collection points listed above.

Please send monetary donations to:  NALC Disaster Response, 2299 Palmer Dr. Suite 220, New Brighton, MN  55112.

Update, Sept 11, 2018:
