15 This is what the Sovereign Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: “Go visit this administrator, Shebna, who supervises the palace,[a] and tell him:[b] 16 ‘What right do you have to be here? What relatives do you have buried here?[c] Why[d] do you chisel out a tomb for yourself here? He chisels out his burial site in an elevated place, he carves out his tomb on a cliff.

22 This is an oracle[a] about the Valley of Vision:[b] What is the reason[c] that all of you go up to the rooftops? 2 The noisy city is full of raucous sounds; the town is filled with revelry.[d] Your slain were not cut down by the sword; they did not die in battle.[e]

21 This is an oracle[a] about the wilderness by the Sea:[b] Like strong winds blowing in the south,[c] one invades from the wilderness, from a land that is feared. 2 I have received a distressing message:[d] “The deceiver deceives, the destroyer destroys. Attack, you Elamites!

How delightful it is to see approaching over the mountains[a] the feet of a messenger who announces peace, a messenger who brings good news, who announces deliverance, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!”[b] 8 Listen,[c] your watchmen shout; in unison they shout for joy, for they see with their very own eyes[d] the Lord’s return to Zion.

10 The Lord again spoke to Ahaz: 11 “Ask for a confirming sign from the Lord your God. You can even ask for something miraculous.”[a] 12 But Ahaz responded, “I don’t want to ask; I don’t want to put the Lord to a test.”[b] 13 So Isaiah replied,[c] “Pay attention,[d] family[e] of David.[f] Do you consider it too insignificant to try the patience of men? Is that why you are also trying the patience of my God? 14 For this reason the Lord himself will give you a confirming sign.[g] Look, this[h] young woman[i] is about to conceive[j] and will give birth to a son. You, young woman, will name him[k] Immanuel.[l]

16 At that time[a] the Egyptians[b] will be like women.[c] They will tremble and fear because the Lord of Heaven’s Armies brandishes his fist against them.[d] 17 The land of Judah will humiliate Egypt. Everyone who hears about Judah will be afraid because of what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies is planning to do to them.[e]

19 This is an oracle[a] about Egypt: Look, the Lord rides on a swift-moving cloud and approaches Egypt. The idols of Egypt tremble before him; the Egyptians lose their courage.[b] 2 “I will provoke civil strife in Egypt:[c] brothers will fight with one another, as will neighbors, cities, and kingdoms.[d]

18 Beware, land of buzzing wings,[a] the one beyond the rivers of Cush, 2 that sends messengers by sea, who glide over the water’s surface in boats made of papyrus. Go, you swift messengers, to a nation of tall, smooth-skinned people,[b] to a people that are feared far and wide,[c] to a nation strong and victorious,[d]
