In recent weeks, the media has been full of stories about ISIS militants torturing Christians in Iraq and Syria. ISIS started as a branch of al-Qaeda and is known for its violent attacks, including kidnappings, bombings and executions. The group’s goal is to turn Iraq and Syria into one large Islamic state. In Iraq, almost 1.3 million people have been forced from their homes this year.

The North American Lutheran Church recommends that those wishing to assist the Christians and others besieged by ISIS in Syria and Iraq make gifts to Samaritan’s Purse, “a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world.” Based on the parable of the Good Samaritan, this organization seeks to help those in need worldwide through the distribution of food and water, supplies, medical care and shelter. Recently, over 80 tons of blankets, coats, children’s clothes and insulated plastic was airlifted into Iraq. Samaritan’s Purse has also distributed food, water, mattresses and pillows to the refugees.

If you would like to help with the ongoing efforts in Iraq and Syria, you can donate to Samaritan’s Purse.
