Today’s readings: 2 Kings 20:1-21; Acts 12:1-17; Luke 7:11-17

One thing is certain, when Jesus shows up lives and situations change. Here we see a great miracle take place as a man is raised from the dead. As a follower of Christ, I’m astounded and flabbergasted by this event. Could you image being an eyewitness to Jesus raising someone from the dead? Wow, what a stupendous happening! I can’t vouch for you but I have never witnessed something of this magnitude. However, even though the miracle itself is beyond comprehension, that is only the tip of the iceberg of what is happening. Much more is taking place here than meets the eye.

This man was his mother’s only son and on top of that, she was a widow. Unlike our time, there is no social safety-net, and very little in the way of charity to help this woman survive. Her son was her only means of support for her livelihood. Without him she would be reduced to begging and perhaps slavery. So in retrospect, two lives where saved with one miracle, the man and his mother. You see, when Jesus shows up, lives are changed on many levels.

Prayer: Father, may you intervene and change our lives. Amen.
