Today’s readings: 1 Samuel 1:1-20; Acts 1:1-14; Luke 20:9-19

In 1966, Nancy Sinatra released what would become a number one hit in the US and UK. “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” declared that “one of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you.” If you replace those boots with sandals, it would sum up Israel’s treatment of God. We are the tenants who rejected his prophets and eventually killed his Son, then rejecting and killing Christ’s apostles.

In truth, people do not reject God’s messengers alone; they walk all over God. Nonetheless, the message goes forth with Spirit power. It blows where it will. And God will bless that message just as he blessed barren Hannah.

For a time, it may seem that the things of God are not going too well. Many lament the demise of the Church, as if somehow God has actually gotten the boot. Nothing could be further from the truth, for all who reject the Christ will be those who ultimately stumble and fall (1 Pet 2:8).

Prayer: Guide us ever, great Redeemer; feed us now and ever more. Amen.
