“The Church exists by mission as a fire exists by burning.” Those words describe Immanuel Lutheran Church of Sumter, South Carolina. Kindled by the Holy Spirit, they are a small gathering at the base of a big flame. Their diverse congregation gathers for worship, Sunday School and Bible studies, and then disperses across their community and state, bearing the name and love of Jesus.

Immanuel reaches into human lives through two primary missions, to the incarcerated and returning citizens, and to the aging, as well as other ministries. Their Stand by Me prison ministry provides weekly worship, Bible studies and individual ministry to returning citizens at four South Carolina prisons and one detention center, and mails letters, Bibles and books to the incarcerated in a total of 20 prisons. Immanuel’s Remember Me offers weekly worship and Bible study at two senior living facilities. Other caring ministries include a free Christian library for adults and children in the community, and monthly meals at the local crisis shelter for the homeless. In addition, pillows are provided for hospital patients as well as donations to community ministries to assist those in need.

Having received grant funding in the past from the NALC, Immanuel is now seeking additional financial and prayer partnerships.
