luke7-47

Today’s readings: Hosea 9:1–9; Acts 24:1–23; Luke 7:36–50

Have we become so comfortable with Jesus, that we do not give him the proper respect? The answer is a whopping, “Yes!” We have become lax in our spiritual life, regarding Jesus as wallpaper instead of the mighty and triumphant King and Savior. This is not to say that everyone is like this, but in a way, we are all guilty.

One night while in college, I was waiting tables at a small, fine dining restaurant. My sole job was to make their experience the best possible, waiting on them hand and foot. One of the dangers of this one-on-one style of serving is that you become complacent, standing in the corner and listening to the conversation, instead of refilling empty water glasses. There lies the danger: not following through with the job at hand.

When Jesus entered Simon’s house, the custom of the day would mandate that you offer refreshment. Simon neglected this custom. Perhaps he was too wrapped up in Jesus’ presence. In any case, the woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her tears and precious perfume had it right: give your all to Jesus. Do not treat him as wallpaper hanging around in your life. Give him the respect he is due.

Prayer: Gracious God, help us to never forget the price your Son paid for us. Amen.

Today’s devotion was written by Joshua Morgan, Pastor at Advent Lutheran Church in Kings Mountain, NC.
