matthew10-22

Ezekiel 37:21b–28; 1 John 2:18–29; Matthew 10:16–23

The Word today reminds us of life’s challenges as we live with “one foot in heaven.” Jesus calls this the little while. While working on a motto for a civic project, I needed a sentence that would take us from the past, through the present, and into the future. Hours later, I finally penned a sentence and said, “Wow, this is what a Christian’s life is all about!” A Christian is someone who remembers the past with thanksgiving and has the sunrise of the future on his face.

A Christian is a weird sort. We are earthlings, yet the Bible says we are citizens of heaven. This world is not our home, but it is our residence. Furthermore, we are to live in the world, but we are not to be of the world. Someone asked, “Since God is love, why doesn’t he provide us with an immediate escape route to heaven as soon as we are converted? Why does he leave us in such an insane, godless setting?”

While I am basking in the sunrise of the future, I rejoice that in a little while I will see God face to face. My puny questions now will be of no consequence then.

Prayer: Father, while I wait for Jesus, I pray that the Spirit may guide my steps until at last I can hear him say, “Well done.” Amen.

Today’s devotion was written by Thurmond Plexico, retired NALC Pastor, Salisbury, NC.
